We’re Puttin’ the Band Back Together

Hey, man! We’re puttin’ the band back together!

Both Ryan and I have some musical talent in our blood. I play the guitar, and Ryan does something involving making records sound all scratchy and good. I don’t know what he calls it, but he’s good – and he raps. Well.

But that got me wondering: if the Ping were to put together a band, would you play a musical instrument? Do we have any accordion or kazoo players in the house? If not… what do you play?

I used to play clarinet in elementary school and junior high. I own a guitar, but I haven't really learned to play it in the time I've had it. I do play a decent kazoo, though. But that's about it.

Someone's gotta be the human beat box.

I got lead harmonica!

By the way, I can also jam out a great rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" on the slide whistle.

I have no musical talent at all. I'd be the perfect producer.

jk - Do you sing well or was that a threat? :)

I can indeed sing. Think: Karen Carpenter meets Natalie Merchant. When I got out of college, a friend and I thought of playing in some small clubs (he plays guitar) but the fear of sucking in all that smoke prevented me from going through with it.

I could play back up harmonica (about as good as Bruce Willis was on his Bruno album) and back up vocals (I'm no Natalie Merchant) and I beat a mean bongo!

Let's see... 2 years with the Brandywine Pops Orchesta (Timpani), 2 years with the Dover Symphony (Principle Percussionist), 3 years with the Diamond State Concert Band (Percussion). 1 year Harrisburgh Westshorement 1996 DCA World Champions, Undefeated Percussion 2 years running, taking every caption. Then there's about 6 years of high school and college marching, concert, jazz bands and chamber choir.

I also play whistle and bodhran when I perform traditional irish music.

I play cello, and I can fake violin and viola well enough if it's pop music. I think it'd be best to keep me hidden behind an instrument way in the back somewhere, though. Robert can stand in the front wearing a sparkly suit to distract everyone.

I march with the bass drum like nobody's business, baby. I do tricks that make black men cry with shame.

I'm talking about the bass drum, perverts.

We are such a talented group! All the more reason to have a convention somewhere.

Hey, that would be a Ping Convention right? Now, that's a good idea!
