Three Quick Ways Facebook Could Improve

1. Improve searching. One thing MySpace does right is it lets you search for people and limit results to an age range. When I’m looking for a John Smith I went to school with, I don’t want to try and wade through thousands of results, most without pictures, when I know he’s 32 or 33 years old.

2. Improve groups. It’s nice that you can group your friends and then set privacy levels or see updates based on those groups, but why in the world is there “friends not in a group” option? I want to make sure everyone’s accounted for, and going through one-by-one is just stupid.

3. Fix picture tagging. Right now, you click on a person’s face and choose them from your friends list. You should be able to a.) tag someone that’s not your friend (and it should wait for their confirmation) and b.) focus on an individual. Right now, when you tag a person, the area of the photo that is tagged is huge. That’s fine if it’s a close-up, but one photo I have has several hundred people in it and really could use fine-grained tagging.

Other than that, I’m surprised that I’m still using Facebook regularly. People are popping up out of nowhere from my past, and it’s been fun reconnecting with them or even just seeing what they look like now. And thank God the new design demphasized applications… they’re finally out of the way and much less annoying (no more zombie bites or requests to join games I don’t have time to play).

In the last month it seems like my entire high school has shown up on Facebook. I’m getting or sending a friend request almost every day from somebody I have talked to since 1985.

Me too! I did have to block some guy I don’t even remember from high school though. Turns out my bad vibe was right! He had been banned from Facebook for a while.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
