Silly Speed Limits

You’d think with a Ping title like that, I’d rail against the speed limits of 65 and 55 I encounter on the expressway. Nuh uh. There are two really odd speed limits I’ve seen recently, and those are way more fun.

The first was at the rental car return garage at San Francisco International Airport. While going down a ramp I was doing perhaps 10 miles per hour. The posted speed limit? 7.5 miles per hour. I really wonder how that one was determined – is 7.75 too fast? How does one tell if a car is going 7.5, anyway?

The second is at a corporate corporateplex near my work. Once in the main parking lot, the posted speed limit is 6 miles per hour. Six! I’m going to guess that 5 was deemed “too slow”, 10 “too fast”, and the sign maker was a big fan of Jenna Von Oy.

I think the property owners believe that by picking an odd speed, you are more likely to notice the sign. It obviously worked on you! The real question is does it make you more aware of your speed?

My favorite wacky speed limit was a few years ago in Oklahoma, near OKC airport. Apparently there’s some law in Oklahoma that they couldn’t change interstate speed limits by more than a set amount without legislative action.

So, to get around that, for a good part of the summer, the speed limit on I-240 was 52 MPH. They actually had signs made that said 52 MPH.

We were always amused by that sign.

On one of the few roads to approach Mbabane (capital of Swaziland) there are a couple of signs which make you feel as if you’re being watched. You come down a hill and a sign says “SLOW” so you slow down drive round a slight bend and are faced with “SLOWER!”

Digressing slightly, still on signs but not to do with speed, my all time favourite sign was next to a standpipe by a gate leading from the beach to a hotel in the Dominican Republic, the sign read:
“PLEASE WASH THE SAND FROM YOUR FEET BEFORE TRESSPASSING”

The speed limit in my Dad’s apartment complex is 11. Also, this long, straight, flat road surrounded by corn fields is 25. There is a historic one lane covered bridge in the middle of it so they don’t want people to crash on it, which is understandable, but the 25 zone is extremely long for the short bridge.

I am trying to find out if there is a legal speed limit in parking lots in Oklahoma, one that you can be ticketed for. I was under the impression that businesses are considered private property, and that officers cannot randomly ticket someone for going to fast in a parking lot.
Anyone know anything about this?

What is this then?
