I was a bit baffled when I heard that the Fat Boys had headed back to the studio to re-record a couple of their most famous songs from the 80s, especially since one of them, “Human Beat Box,” was pretty much a showcase for beat box Buff Love, who died in 1995.
But the level of baffled-ness went off the scale when I looked at the other releases from the label the Fat Boys would be using. The one that knocked me off my chair:
Not only has the world’s most disgraced pop rapper returned yet again, he, too has re-recorded his most popular track, “Ice Ice Baby” (in four different versions!). But the real kicker is this: he’s also covered other hip-hop songs.
Number one: hip-hop songs generally do not get covered.
Number two: when they do, it shouldn’t be by Vanilla Ice.
Who does he cover, you ask? Public Enemy, House of Pain, Sir Mix-A-Lot, EPMD, Special Ed (!), Bob Marley, Chubb Rock (!!), and Cypress Hill.
Mr. Ice: When you came out with the pseudo hardcore/hip-hop hybried album, I laughed but figured you were at least trying something new. When you were on The Surreal Life, you came off as a douche, but I attributed that to the editing process. But, with this latest project, I have just three letters: W. T. F?
