This Ping redesign took 7 years and cost $58 million in taxpayer dollars.

Restaurant.com

It’s been around for a while, but I wanted to take a minute to big up Restaurant.com (don’t pluralize it). The idea is simple: buy restaurant gift certificates with heavy restrictions for discounted rates. Generally, you can get a $25 gift certificate for $10. Last week, they ran a promotion that was hard to pass up (and I didn’t): a $25 gift certificate for $2.

Since we’re on the road, we searched and found a restaurant on their list and picked up a gift certificate. The restrictions were that we had to spend $40 on dinner only on a weeknight. Doable, so I spent the two whole dollars and we had a nicely discounted check at an Indian restaurant by the time our dinner was done.

I don’t mind working within restrictive rules like those when you can save $23 on a $40 meal.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
