Frontier House

PBS stations in America are now reairing 1900 House, which Ryan checked out back in January. At the end of the first episode, however, was a teaser for a new show in a very similar vein: Frontier House.

This time, instead of situating a modern-day family in a house from 1900, three families will be chosen to live in a situation very similar to those faced by Old West frontier families in the 1880s. It’s situated in Montana, and it looks to be just as interesting as its predecessor. The update at the site as of this writing mentions that whilest traveling by horse-covered wagon, a forest fire was encountered and came close to taking the entire crew and families out!

I think what sets these two shows apart versus the commercial reality shows is that these situations are a tad less controlled and gun more for realism. With 1900 House, the house was remodeled to amazing specifications. Things such as lighting, and even the type of vacuum cleaner were taken into account. Shows such as The Real World, which I’ve gotten sucked into, are much different and are not as “fish out of water” as they seem. Survivor comes closer, perhaps, but I haven’t seen the show so I’m guessing on concept here. The game show quality affects that, though.

So, check out 1900 House while you can, and keep an eye out for Frontier House. Interesting television. -pm
