The Daily Ping

There were rumors of a Ping book, but those were started on the internet.

Fifth Grade: Beer Power!

In an attempt to lighten things up a bit, here’s a picture I came across of a small subset of my fifth grade class (I’m not in this shot, nor do I know who took it), dating back to 1986/87:

Ryan's Fifth Grade Class

Notice in the background: an Ace Computer, one of the first Apple II compatibles. It was on that computer that I played Transylvania and wrote some of my best BASIC programs (like the infamous “Mating Game,” which randomly paired up males and females from our fifth grade class).

One more thing to take special note of: Bobby, the furthest person to the right side of the photo, is wearing a black shirt that says “Beer Power” with pictures of beer bottles. It was his favorite shirt. For some reason, I don’t think that shirt would fly in a fifth grade class today. -ram

That Bobby is awesome! Straight up, a kid in 5th grade with that kind of sense of humor is rad!

The "Beer Power" shirt is the first thing that I noticed. What were his parents thinking by allowing him to wear that in fifth grade?--It's the eighties equivalent of a Co-Ed Naked/Big Johnson T-shirt. It reminds me of this kid I knew in second grade who's parents used to let him drink coffee every morning. He would get to school and stutter when he talked, shake, and be unable to sit still. His main topic of conversation was also-----Coffee. I think he was addicted.

Did Bobby drink beer for breakfast? Was he an alcoholic at age 11 like Drew Barrymore? Enquiring minds want to know.

Bobby was actually a really nice kid. Not too many people made fun of him because of his strength and size (did you get a load of those arms in the close-up shot?). I always got along really well with him -- he was surprisingly quiet and friendly.

Bobby was under heavy sedation.

I did notice the size of his arms. Though I am almost 26 I am sure a child his size could really mess me up. His shirt does have a bottle of Miller High Life "The Champagne of Beers" on it, so the kid is OK in my book.

I used to have that shirt when I was a kid - I wore it around the same age is Bobby! - I used to like to wear that shirt too - it was just a kid thing. I hated beer when I was a kid - now I like it - but not too much, or you'll regret it the next day! My shirt used to say now that I think about it - it said "six pack attack!" I remember and here I am, 31 yrs old. I can remember some of the strangest things when I was a kid! My memory of my childhood is all good!

Had to resurrect this Ping—the other morning I turned on a rerun of Finders Keepers on Nick's GAS (Games And Sports) network. It was one from the mid-80s that featured kids from my middle school! In the final shot of the show, as the camera panned the crowd, I saw tons of familiar faces—one of them was none other than Bobby "Beer Power" Grimes from the above picture. Very cool.

What is this then?
