How do you open your letters?

Some people slice along the side of an envelope and slide out the contents, all nice and neat like. Some people use a letter opener along the top. Me, I tear where it’s sealed, usually making a mess of the envelope in the process. I have a letter opener, I just forget to use it.

How do you do it?

I bet Paul steams his letters open with the heat from a cast iron kettle sitting on his woodburning stove.

Woodburning? Please, we've got a coal stove.

I tend to rip them open along the top of the envelope. Works well.

I usually open my coal burning stove by ripping it open along the sides, then dumping the coal onto the floor, which results in a huge mess.

The best way is to tap one end of the envelope against a hard surface (to settle the contents towards that end) and to snip off the other end of the envelope with a pair of scissors. Just be careful not to cut into the letter inside.
There doesn't seem to be an neat way to open a letter with your fingers alone, sad to say.
