The Reading Homeless Man

A few years back, I stayed in San Francisco up near the Metreon and not far from Chinatown. I was there for a conference, and on my way to the Moscone Center each morning, I saw a man that sat on the street near the hotel I was staying in, reading a book. A deep, philosophical tome, if I remember correctly. He had a cup sitting out, accepting spare change, and though he’d never make eye contact to ask for money, he would look up from his book and mutter a sincere “thank you” if you dropped some coinage in his cup. A year later when I returned, he was still there every day, reading away, feeding his mind.

Do any San Francisco Pingers know the guy I’m talking about? Is he still there?

I've never been to SanFran, but I've seen plenty of homeless dudes around Ohio, but none of them do anything except look homeless and carry cardboard signs. And they're always usually gone within a day.

I used to live in SF - it's a homeless mecca, believe you me. I even had my favorite homeless woman, this nice incredibly smelly lady covered with scabs who looked like a scarecrow. She always sat on the front stoop of my apartment building, and hissed at me when I walked by. Fun! But no, I don't remember the man you refer to.

Tina -- I noticed that San Fran has, by far, the most homeless people of any major city I've been to. My first two days in SF I was totally depressed by the sheer number. Once I got past that (and the crack whore incident), I liked the city a lot more. :)

Ryan --

Umm, the crack whore incident? Are we talking San Francisco or Tijuana here? I think we all need a little more background here. ;-)

Yeah, I saw that guy last week or so. He was chilling with his book near The Guitar Center on Mission and 10th.

Good singers? Perhaps. Literate? Not likely.
