The Daily Ping

Not a toilet in the country has not been affected by the Ping in one way or another.

[Special thanks to Ryan for filling in for me while I was in beautiful Council Bluffs, Iowa. No one else would fill in for me – Ryan did. What a man.]

Now that I’m a mile above sea level, there is one thing that I have to drink over and over: water. I’m drinking it all the time. Straight from the Brita pitcher, into my body, and out of it what feels like moments later. It’s great, though: it has helped me learn exactly how many steps there are from the couch to the bathroom (20).

There’s always a hubbub about how one should drink 8 glasses of water every day. The question is, do you do that? And if so, how close is your nearest bathroom?

The 8 glasses of water thing is an urban legend. ( ) .

Our house has 4 bathrooms - one is always nearby.

What does your relation to sea level have to do with an increase in water consumption? If anything, I'd think you'd need to breathe more.

Well, the big thing is that there's a need to stay hydrated for about the first week or so - just to get used to the differences. It's really, really dry here and Chicago wasn't.

I have my 55 oz glass, similar to the one that Paul has in the picture, and I leave it on my desk and try to drink it all day.

I do have a bathroom in my classroom, but only if it is an EMERGENCY will I use it. Plus my walk to the "adult" bathroom is my only chance to get away from my students for a few minutes.

Paul, didn't you know they have a drought in Denver? With all the water you're drinking, you're single-handedly making things worse! I can make it from the Lazy Boy to the bathroom in 14 steps. No 12 steps here.

I drink at least 2 gallons of water a day. It is good for your skin. Nobody ever guesses that I am as old as I am so I assume that by flushing impurities out of my system I am aging slower.

I suffered from severe water shortage when I moved to Denver. The dry air and altitude really take a lot out of a good ol' midwesterner. Believe me, it takes well over a week to get used to it. I've been here over one year and still bring water with me everywhere I go...

Drinking water is good for your skin...keeping yourself saturated is a great idea. Don't they say that by the time you realize you ARE thirsty, you should have already consumed quite a bit of the wet stuff? I know I don't drink enough....unless you are doing ecstasy, I don't think you can drink TOO much.

What is this then?
