In Sleepers

Weekends can be great for sleeping in, especially after a week’s worth of getting up early for work. Granted, some people are morning people and could never stay in bed for ten straight hours, but some of us can sleep just as long as we did in college.

Today’s question is: what’s the longest amount of time you’ve slept in one stretch? This doesn’t include being sick, since that can artificially inflate your ability to sleep long periods. I know in college that 12 straight hours was not unusual, and that I may have even gotten up to 14 hours depending on how late I was up the night before. I recall occasionally waking up shortly before dinner on some Saturdays. Since graduating, though, I don’t think I’ve topped ten or eleven.

I cant say I have an exact figure on the longest I've ever slept, but when I've worked jobs with unusual shifts (overnight, early morning), it always throws my sleep schedule off..As a result, there ends up being one day where I catch up on my sleep..I can remember several 16 hour days of sleeping.

The bad thing is: No matter how much sleep you get, it's never enough. The more you sleep, the groggier you get.

That said, I need a nap right now.

I'm sure I did 12 and 14 hour sleeps in college - but I don't remember specifically. I can say this though - once you have kids, 8 consecutive hours of sleep is very very rare.

Hmmm, I think I have slept 15 or 16 hours after returning from Europe, largely because I had been awake for 25 hours.

Dave's right about being groggy after too much sleep; I think I am much nicer at work when I have slept only 6 or 7 hours. Or maybe I'm just delirious and perceive myself to be nicer than I really am because I'm trying so hard not to come across as irritable.

One time when I was just back from a trip to England, I selpt for 14 hours. Usually it's between 6 and 8 hours for me.

Last year, I did a three-week stretch of four days on, three days off - each shift was 10.5 hours - after a fourth day of work one week I went home and slept 17 hours.

I haven't slept for any particularly exceptional length of time (but I do doze for hours!), but at the end of my first year at uni I finished my exams, partied hard for a week and was knackered by the end. So tired in fact that I slept right through the incredibly loud fire alarm that was bolted to my wall. Didn't know a thing about it until everyone else surfaced about mid-afternoon the next day...

What is this then?
