Could you care less?

For the longest time, when I didn’t care about something in the least, I’d say that “I could care less about…” But as I thought about it, that phrase was just wrong… if I didn’t care about something, it should be, “I couldn’t care less about…” I’d heard people say both, though, and recently wondered which is more popular.

So, I did what any righteous geek would do: I went to Googlefight.

The winner? Interestingly enough: “could care less” by a margin of 150,000 to 124,000. So apparently I wasn’t alone when I told people I could care less.

But, really, I’m sure you couldn’t care less about this whole argument.

Get out, the incorrect version won? I do care, and that's what's sad.

I agree with the general sentiment here that it is weird that dropping "that" has become the dominant rendition of the saying. However, I have on a few occasions used "I could care less" as sort of a dare or challenge. If someone is trying to guilt me into caring more about some issue, I might respond with "I could care less", so don't tempt me.

I'm probably in a minority, but I prefer the sound of the incorrect saying. It just has a better rythm to it--no hard stopping sounds in the middle. Still, I avoid using it altogether because it doesn't make much sense the way I like and I don't want to say the other. And saying "I could care less... but only under the following circumstances..." loses all its force entirely.
