Hurricane Drinking Game

Anytime that a hurricane or other major storm is the main news story (as it is now on the East Coast with Frances), grab some alcohol, turn on the local news, and play this simple drinking game:

  • Anytime the newscaster says “hunkering down” take a drink
  • Anytime the newscaster says “hoping for the best, preparing for the worst” (or any variation), take a drink

By the end of a half-hour broadcast, you’ll be smashed.

My brother spent 11 hours on an Air Force plane, flying in and out of the hurricane Friday night. We were certainly hoping for the best! (He's fine, but very tired.)

By the looks of a lot of the coverage (watch Fox News at 3am!), some of the anchors themselves have been playing this game.

Anytime a on location reporter actually falls on his or her ass due to the wind - drink twice.

Just wanted to note that tonight on the local 5 o'clock news that in the first minute of the broadcast, while reporting on Hurricane Ivan, the newscaster said "hunkering down" and a minute later it read "Preparing for the Worst" in big letters across the screen.

Also noticed: you never hear the word "battening" unless there's bad weather coming.
