Band Aid 2004

So after hearing a big brouhaha about how iTunes UK wasn’t carrying the Band Aid 2004 single, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” I was a bit perplexed. I mean it was a good song and all, for the time, but a remake? Eh.

But then I heard it! Oh, did I hear it! And my opinion changed… okay, okay, it didn’t change at all. The remake is pretty much by-the-numbers. Nothing new except the addition of a little rap here and there. The whole thing sounds slicker and doesn’t have that same Christmas vibe, to my ears, that the original did.

More interesting is that in the US, coverage of this has been nearly nonexistent. The last Band Aid single made a mark across the globe, but this one seems to just be making a slight indentation in the UK. So why bother? Couldn’t they have done a new song? Or maybe a remake of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” A classic, that.

I have heard the new Band Aid song on the radio - I think it sucks.

"it was a good song and all"

???!

I cannot begin to tell you how much I loathe this song, though I will try. "There won't be snow in Africa..." well, no, in most parts there won't. It's a climate thing. "Do they know it's Christmas?" Some of them, but the Muslims pretty much don't care.

If you've got a good cause, for f's sake at least do a better song--maybe one with less eye-rolling lyrics?

Man, I hatehatehate this song. Hate. Hate. Gah.

Okay, I'm done.

This was the song that introduced Paul Young to most of the US...prior to this, only a few had heard of him or could identify his voice. It segued nicely into his 1985 hit "Everytime you go away"; I saw him in the fall of 1985 at PSU.....it was a sold-out concert for which my friends and I camped out in line. He pulled my very happy friend Robin up on stage and sang a ballad to her. Why can I remember this but cannot find my grocery list?

I am planning to buy the Live Aid DVD with the gift certificate I think I am getting from amazon.

I have not heard Band Aid 2004 because I don't listen to any top 40 radio....something tells me I won't like it.

What is this then?
