ID Please

One of my favorite flickr groups is the ID Please group. Members post a picture of an unknown item (usually a flower or an insect, though sometimes people find their way in there as well) and hope someone can identify it for them.

This past week, I posted a picture of a bug I saw in my office. By the end of the day, it had been identified. I was impressed.

I’ll be really impressed, though, if positive IDs come through on this picture or this picture.

Ugh. I can't believe you've never seen one of those nasty centipedes before!

They are always in the basement. They must like moisture, and if you ever squish one, they just turn into a wet spot. I hear they can bite and cause quite a painful irritation, but I don't know for sure. Sort of unlike me not to check and leave a link, but I don't care in this case. I do know that they are wicked fast, so if you want to squish one, you have to move quick. But squishing them is about the most unpleasant of any bug squishing. There's no satisfying crunch under heel or toe, and really, it just makes a mess.

Gross. I'm getting sick now. How does McAleer feel about the name?

"wicked fast?" Are you from MA?

No, but I lived there recently for three years and probably picked it up then. I really try not to say it, but it worked there because centipedes really are shockingly fleet runners. They'll run up up from ankle to face in about 1/2 second. Don't let them bite you, even the little ones in the garden. Dat hoits!

I don't know about this critter on Ryan's wall, but it looks like the kind that is often in gardens. According to the linked medical site, this one could be a biter.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
