The Great Google Outage of 2009

Great googley moogly.

This morning I woke up early to get in to work early, and figured, “Ah, I’ll write the Ping at lunch. I’ve got a great idea!” Of course that idea never materialized… until Google decided to stop working late this morning. Brilliant!

It was scary, no? If you were affected, that is. To me it demonstrated just how unbelievably fragile the internet can be – and more importantly, how much of the web depends on Google. Sites left and right were affected due to “little” things like Google Analytics, Google AdSense, and Google Code.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything shifts as a result of this. Probably not. But it gives the DOJ some ammo if they decide to go after them, doesn’t it?

Looks like I picked the right day to sleep in on a day off. Most of my co-workers use Gmail exclusively, I’m sure they were ready to jump off a building this morning.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
