Spare Change

Riddle me this: have you ever changed a flat on your car – specifically, replaced it with a spare?

To me, changing a tire is one of those “essential life skills” one needs if one is driving a car. I don’t find changing a tire to be terribly difficult; rather, the hardest part usually is jacking up the car and/or removing the spare from its location. For instance, the spare on my minivan is located below the front seats. If I ever need to change it, that’s gonna be a pain in the rear.

I’m surprised how many new cars make it so hard to get the spare out of it’s storage area.

A few years ago, while working as a traffic reporter in Delaware, I got a flat in the minivan I was driving (company provided, mind you). The spare tire was secured underneath the car, back by the rear bumper. That means I had to get down on my back in the middle of a parking lot, undo the tire, then get the hell out of the way before I got slammed in the head with a spare tire.

The rest is really very easy, and I totally agree, Paul, it’s one of those essential life skills that everyone should really know. It should be taught in the same class with how to use jumper cables.

What is this then?
