So there’s this holiday on a Thursday. You can take Friday off of work and give yourself a four-day weekend, or you can take Wednesday off and work a short day on Friday (since nobody else is going to work that day, anyway). Or you can take both days off and give yourself the grand-colassal five-day weekend, knowing that the following Monday will be extra-full of work.
