Signs You're a Budding Font Nerd


On the way home Friday, traffic was thick. I was coming home on a two-lane road in the left lane with nowhere to go. Suddenly I had a red Monte Carlo tailgating me - and, as I said, nowhere to go. She then cut over to the right lane and tried to pass me, but couldn't because of... yes, traffic.

But as she tried to pass, Jeani spotted a sticker in her driver's side quarter window. We eventually pulled even to see what it said and it looked like it said, "I'm not speeding. I'm qualifying."

Okay, fine. At the next stoplight, we took another look to find that the sticker actually said, "I'am not speeding I'am qualifying." Yes, I'am. It got me to wondering what the apostrophe was replacing... but when I mentioned my displeasure on the grammar front, I added, "...And it's in Comic Sans MS! I can't respect that."

Comic Sans MS on a Monte Carlo. Just say no.

My dear mother, may she rest in peace, used to spell "I'm" in exactly the same way. She also misspelled my middle name on my birth certificate--a middle name she shared.

I am not making this up.

I have often wondered what exactly it is about Comic Sans that makes it so horrific. I think it may be a class issue, and WE'RE STINKIN' SNOBS.

I think hating Comic Sans is the mark of both a nerd and a snob - a nerd to recognize it (ie, see it enough) and a snob to hate it.

Comic Sans is horrific only because there are so many other good comic book-like fonts out there. Just like Arial being vastly inferior to Helvetica, and Times New Roman being inferior to the entire damn world. (Hoefler Text, baby!)

I think hating Comic Sans is the mark of both a nerd and a snob - a nerd to recognize it (ie, see it enough) and a snob to hate it.

Comic Sans was a very trendy font for a period of time, and it became so overused that most type aficianados cringe when they see it. I for one fall into said category. If you've been forced into enough Typography classes in school, by very nature you're going to recognize almost any font on a whim.

As far as being a snob... I beg to differ. :) I just think Paul has good tastes in seeing something horrid and calling it as it is.

Agreed. Most of the comic-style freeware/shareware fonts you can find via a Google search make Comic Sans look sad. It's THAT bad. One of my favorites is just called: Comic Book

I guess you can almost label (Adobe) Tekton as a Comic font, although one I s'pose could argue it as a sans-serif font too. It was a popular font as well back in the day of Newton Messagepads.

I can agree there but alas, I feel that in comparison it's not as dramatic. Arial isn't a horrible font. It's not as nice as Helvetica, but I can think of better than Helvetica as well. Even though for a sans-serif font I'd rank Helvetica in my top 10. It's an old standby for sure. I use Arial too though; along with Verdana, Tahoma, Geneva, et al.

...and Times New Roman being inferior to the entire damn world. (Hoefler Text, baby!)

Ummmm... 'cept Comic Sans. :) I hate Comic Sans enough that I can fathom using Times for things. It's ugly as sin but hell, at least it's not New York on the Mac. LoL I give it that much credit. New York is like Times but at 12 points, it appears like 18 point Times. It's no more/less attractive than Times, which is to say it's a pretty ugly Serif font as well.

I agree though, Hoefler Text is nice, Garamond is also quite nice too. Adobe Jenson isn't bad either.

New York on the mac.

Well Any City named font was a font designed for the Imagewriter a 72ppi dotmatrix printer and thus its sizing was developed to make it look good on 1985 technology - being converted to ttf for hi-res imaging is just silly. Chicago I can understand it was a sys font handy to have that scalably and maybe geneva - but there it ends!

ok ok I am happy for all font to be as ttf/ otf whatever. but there's usually a reason for why a font is like it is - but since no one usually knows it gets used for the wrong reasons and jeez it says 'comic' in the freaking name is it a comic book - no? then don't freaking use it!!
